A Community-Supported Learning Network
SMILE Learning Centres is an educational support initiative of SMILE — Society for Meaningful Intervention, Learning and Empowerment. It gives academic support, mentoring and encouragement to children from economically disadvantaged families studying in Standards 8 to 12.
Many children from low-income families have the ability and willingness to learn but lack adequate tuition, individual academic support or a suitable place to study outside school. The programme bridges this gap by connecting students who need extra help with volunteers who can give it.
Focus on Mathematics, Science and English, with more academic and mentoring support as students need
Physical learning centres as well as online sessions, so volunteers can join from anywhere
SMILE handles student identification, volunteer registration, matching, orientation, schedules and monitoring
More than tuition
The programme seeks to build students’ confidence, learning habits, academic motivation and future aspirations through continuous interaction with supportive mentors.
Everyone Who Believes in Learning
Volunteers do not have to be professional teachers. A person who understands a subject well, communicates patiently with children and can commit regular time can contribute meaningfully.
Students
Senior school students, college and university students, and undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Graduates & Professionals
Engineering and professional students, graduates and professionals with suitable academic knowledge.
Educators
Teachers, retired teachers and subject experts.
Caring Individuals
Anyone with good subject knowledge, patience with children and regular time to give.
Share Your Knowledge, Build Confidence
Academic Support
Individual or small-group tuition in Mathematics, Science, English and other subjects: explaining difficult topics, clarifying doubts, supporting homework and assignments, and running revision sessions for examinations.
Study Habits & Motivation
Encouraging regular study habits, identifying where students need extra support, and motivating them to continue their education.
Mentoring Sessions
Depending on interest and expertise: career-awareness sessions, study-skills sessions, reading and communication activities, and mentoring conversations.
Time Commitment
The programme is flexible. Volunteers contribute according to their availability, preferably through a regular weekly commitment.
A volunteer may support one student, a small group of students or a learning centre. Online volunteering is encouraged so students and volunteers can take part from different locations.
How SMILE Will Support Volunteers
SMILE coordinates the programme and connects students with volunteers. Volunteers receive basic orientation and guidance on working with school-age children, plus a framework for scheduling, student allocation, monitoring and feedback.
Volunteers who complete their agreed period of service may be considered for a Volunteer Appreciation/Participation Certificate, subject to the programme’s requirements.
